How do we diagnose PCOS?
- Clinical – Irregular menses or anovulation is one of the major criteria required for diagnosis.
- Biochemical – D2 FSH, LH, Testosterone, FBS, Lipid Profile, TSH, PRL
- USG – Strict criteria for cyst, 12 or more sub capsular follicular cysts, 2-9 mm and/or Increase in ovarion volume up to 10mm³, as determined by TVS.
How do we treat PCOS?
Medical Management:
- Desiring Pregnancy, Ovulation inducing agents, Insulin sensitizers
- Non-desiring Pregnancy, OCPs, Insulin sensitizers like Metformin.
Surgical Management:
- Laparoscopic ovarian drilling – secondary to Medical Management.
Weight loss:
- It is the corner stone of Management in PCOS as it leads to decreased insulin resistance which in turn stimulates ovulation and improves fertility rates.
What are the long term effects of PCOS?
- Endometrial hyperplasia
- Heart Disease
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
